Want to make a difference with your volunteering, preserving maritime history while spending your time with a great team in a friendly environment? Sydney Heritage Fleet is a volunteer organisation dedicated to preserving, restoring and operating vessels which represent Australia's maritime history. They include Tall Ship James Craig, ferry Kanangra, steamship John Oxley, 1902 steam tug Waratah, 1902 VIP launch Lady Hopetoun, 1903 schooner Boomerang and several diesel motor launches.
The Sydney Heritage Fleet Workshops in Rozelle Bay is a busy hive of activity. Our main restoration project is steamer John Oxley, and there are many regularly used vessels on which maintenance is essential. You will find yourself in a very happy friendly work environment where there are no cliques or feuds or jealousies. Just the keen desire to have the joy of having a productive day.
Sydney Heritage Fleet owns, restores and operates historic steam ships, sailing ships and many smaller launches. Our current major project is the restoration to full ocean-going condition of John Oxley a former Moreton Bay pilot steamer, 760 tons. You, the volunteer will be a skilled welder and steel fabricator to aid in the final stages of hull restoration, particularly the forecastle. Your team leader is gentle giant whose welding surpasses marine standard for boiler work.
