Classroom Assistant: Literacy Support for adults

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Alamein Neighbourhood & Learning.
Alamein Neighbourhood & Learning is a friendly neighbourhood house located in Ashburton, running programs in adult community education in English, technology, employment and job skills, as well as local community activities, men's shed, community garden, CHSP, a chatty cafe, community referral and events.
We are looking for volunteers to support our wonderful students with their literacy.
TASKS/DUTIES INVOLVED:
- Assist with setting up the room for the class.
- Assist students with their tasks as directed by the teacher.
- Clarify topics for students, where appropriate and needed.
- Encourage students to engage in and complete their work.
- Assist teacher with resource organisation (photocopying, iPad distribution, etc.)
- Assist with packing up the room as required at end of session.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
- Strong ability in spoken and written English.
- An excellent understanding of English spelling.
- Strong ability to work under supervision and independently.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- A caring, affirming approach, which encourages people to try new activities.
- Strong ability to build rapport with people with slight intellectual disabilities, diverse abilities, and people from English as an Additional Language (EAL) backgrounds.
- Tutoring or teaching experience is valuable but not essential.
