About the role

The Response & Support Team (RST) Paralegal Support Volunteers work alongside our Senior Paralegal Staff to support the management of the Human Rights Law Program’s Legal front desk. Support Paralegals help ensure the front desk runs smoothly by booking client appointments, collecting legal documents, and supporting the overall management of our legal reception. Support Paralegals are given the opportunity to gain practical legal administration experience whilst working within a friendly and inclusive team to support ASRC client's needs.

Program

The Response & Support is a newly designed rapid service delivery team, providing direct and immediate service delivery, assistance, support, assessment (where identified as a priority client) and, where needed, referrals for service users to other support service areas internally and externally. The physical layout of the Response & Support environment features a number of Response Help Desks that directly reflect the key service priorities of people seeking asylum; Housing, Food & Aid, Financial Advocacy & Assistance, Community Development & Empowerment, Legal, Health, Education, Employment, Mental Health & Well-being and General Support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Paralegal Staff members by liaising with clients booking appointments, collecting legal documents
  • Complete tasks for clients, including drafting correspondence, taking accurate messages, booking client appointments
  • Completing Department of Immigration and Border Protection forms.
  • Transcribe voice memorandums
  • General administrative duties including data management, filing and document preparation, photocopying, accurate record keeping, receiving and processing emails, and post

What we’re looking for

  • Able to provide at least a 12-month commitment to the position.
  • Demonstrated interest in Refugee Law and commitment to protecting the rights of people seeking asylum.
  • Ability to work in a culturally appropriate manner in line with ASRC values, and adherence to our responsibilities as a Community Legal Centre.
  • Ability to take instructions, accept feedback, and implement performance improvements.
  • Flexible, collaborative attitude and ability to build strong relationships with our staff, volunteers, clients, suppliers, and associates.
  • Professional phone manner with high-level communication skills, including the confidence to liaise with a range of clients, staff, volunteers, associates, and community members.
  • Attention to detail, administrative and time management skills, and the capacity to handle ongoing and one-off tasks consistently and competently.
  • Technical proficiency in Google and Microsoft systems, formatting documents, preparing letters, and learning new systems.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a legal office.
  • Able to speak one of the following languages: Farsi, Dari, Hazari, Pashto, Urdu, Malay, Tamil, Vietnamese & mandarin.
