Volunteer Website Developer – Suicide Postvention Charity

The Flannel Project

About The Flannel Project

The Flannel Project is a survivor-led charity supporting people impacted by veteran suicide. Our work sits in the postvention space — walking alongside families, friends, and communities left behind, and helping them move through stabilisation, grief, and growth with dignity, choice, and care.

Our website already exists and has a strong foundation. We are now looking for a volunteer website developer to help bring it to its final form making it clearer, warmer, and more impactful for the people who need it most.

About the Role

This is a project-based volunteer role for a creative web developer who enjoys autonomy and wants to take real ownership of a meaningful digital project.

Rather than following step-by-step instructions, you’ll be encouraged to:

  • Immerse yourself in our business plan and existing content
  • understand our purpose, programs, and audience
  • think creatively about how our story is told online
  • shape the look, feel, and flow of the website in a way that feels human, intuitive, and engaging
  • The website is already live, this role is about refinement, storytelling, and creative polish, not building from scratch.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Reviewing the existing website structure and content
  • Using the business plan as a primary source of truth for messaging and intent
  • Reworking layout, navigation, and visual flow to improve clarity and impact
  • Applying design thinking to better communicate who we are and how we help
  • Bringing your own ideas and creative solutions to the table
  • Collaborating with The Flannel Project team for feedback and alignment
  • Delivering a refreshed, cohesive website that you’re proud to put your name to
  • You’ll have genuine creative freedom within our brand, values, and purpose.

What We’re Looking For

We’re less concerned with titles and more interested in how you think. You might be a great fit if you:

  • Have experience in website development or front-end design (Squarespace or similar)

  • Enjoy working independently and taking initiative

  • Are comfortable interpreting written material and turning it into clear digital storytelling

  • Like thinking outside the box and experimenting with ideas

  • Care about purpose-driven work and meaningful impact

  • Are respectful of the sensitive nature of postvention work

Training & Support

  • No formal training required
  • You’ll receive a clear project brief, access to existing assets, and orientation to our mission and values
  • Ongoing support and a single point of contact throughout the project

While this project relates to suicide postvention, the role is focused on website development and does not involve direct support work.

🤍 Why Volunteer With Us

  • Creative freedom and genuine ownership of a real-world project
  • The opportunity to build something meaningful from lived experience
  • A supportive, values-driven environment
  • A finished piece of work you can proudly include in your portfolio
  • Knowing your skills will directly help people navigating one of life’s hardest experiences

How to Apply: Please send a short introduction, links to 1–3 examples of your website or digital work, and a brief response to the following question: If you had creative freedom to shape our website, what would you focus on first, and why? We’re more interested in your thinking and approach than formal qualifications.
