Sewing Group Facilitator

Vinnies Connect

The Ozanam Learning Centre (OLC) is a community centre based in Woolloomooloo where people can connect, learn, participate in activities and workshops, and access a wide range of supports. Our work aims to provide opportunities for inclusion and support for those who need it. The OLC aims to improve to increase the engagement and resilience of community members in order that they enjoy a higher quality of life. We provide creative programs such as art and music, health, well-being and recovery programs, personal development and living skills programs.

Our facility includes a large art and pottery room, a well-equipped music studio, a small gymnasium, a commercial kitchen, a library, computer rooms as well as other spaces in which recreational activities are offered.

We are in the process of launching a social enterprise in which our community members mend and convert clothing, in need of repair, into garments that can be sold to raise funds in inner city Vinnies stores. Our sewing volunteers are required to work with, instruct, encourage, and support our community participants. Elements of the role include:

• Determining the scope and nature of repair and conversion required for individual donated garments.

• Repairing and converting prioritized garments

• Providing guidance and direct assistance to community members involved in the social enterprise program.

• Helping to foster a positive, collaborative and fun culture.

Our volunteers will have well-developed sewing skills. We are looking for people with strong interpersonal skills and an understanding of the importance of this enterprise as a social engagement activity as well as an opportunity for our participants to contribute to the broader community.
