Hunter Volunteer Centre
Logo for Hunter Volunteer Centre

Volunteer with this Service and provide a support person role for people with cognitive impairment at courthouses, police stations, lawyer’s offices and prisons. Volunteers ensure that criminal justice processes and language are explained clearly and that the client’s wishes and decisions are respected. Your strong communication skills and the ability to relate to and interact well with others will be highly regarded. Basic computer skills are required for this role.

Volunteers will develop a knowledge of the criminal justice system and will know that they have made a positive difference for a vulnerable person going through a difficult time in their lives. They will have the opportunity to develop skills and confidence in assisting people in distress. They may be personally thanked for their contribution by clients, family members, solicitors and other personnel working in the criminal justice system.

Online training modules, two-day in-person/Zoom training, buddy shifts with staff or experienced volunteers, ongoing mentoring and the opportunity to undertake further training in providing support in police stations or prisons.
