Therapy Dog Handler with Dog

Nepean Therapy Dogs

Logo for Nepean Therapy Dogs

We aim to provide support to our volunteers by offering training free of charge to you and your dog. We take into account your choice of where you wish to volunteer, ensuring both yourself and your dog work in a safe environment, and guarantee costs are reduced for our volunteers. As we are constantly on the look out for new volunteers, ideally you will be emotionally intelligent, are devoted to learning and adapting, and love dogs. It is of utmost importance that a volunteer is dependable as people will rely on you to bring cheer and routine into their lives. Dogs with their handlers must be able to pass on assessment, comprised of role-playing and obedience.

We accept dogs between the ages of 12 months - 9 years. The age, size, and breed of dog will impact the amount of training needed.

We are assessing the following:

  • The calmness of your dog
  • Your ability to work with the dog
  • Separation anxiety
  • Communication skills
  • Cleanliness of dog
  • Your emotional and empathy awareness

A Working With Children's Check is required, and we may require a National Police Check.

Community demand is growing in Penrith, Hawkesbury, Blacktown, The Hills, and the Blue Mountains. Our training and administration centre is based in Penrith, initial orientation and training starts at Penrith. We aim to post you in a facility as close to your home as possible.

To apply, please visit our 'Nepean Therapy Dogs Inc' website and fill out the 'With Dog' application under the Volunteer tab.

We look forward to hearing from you!
