The role of the Lead Tenant is to support them through the change from ‘being cared for’ to ‘caring for yourself’.

The Lead Tenant program is a Victorian Government initiative in which young people between 15 and 17 are placed in a home with one or more adults (known as Lead Tenants), giving them the opportunity to develop their independent living skills prior to transitioning into adulthood and all the complexities that come along with that.

The Lead Tenant acts primarily as a live-in mentor, providing guidance and encouragement to assist young people to develop independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, managing routine and conflict resolution. The role of a Lead Tenant will suit those who are working or studying, have a genuine interest in the wellbeing of adolescent young people, and who have the required maturity to lead by example, maintain professional boundaries, and demonstrate a positive and healthy routine.

“Volunteering in the Lead Tenant program has been a great experience, despite the occasional challenges that arise in the role. I’d highly recommend it to someone who is looking to make a direct impact in the lives of young people” former Lead Tenant

Lead Tenants are provided the opportunity to spend 2-7 nights per week at the property in a consistent routine and should have availability to attend house meetings and Care Team Meetings for young people. Lead Tenant will liaise with Uniting regularly and provide updates where necessary on the young people and the property.

Lead Tenants can access support over the phone 24/7 to discuss challenges and incidents and are encouraged to participate in exciting training opportunities around adolescent wellbeing and trauma-informed practice.

Lead Tenants receive a small weekly reimbursement for costs that may be incurred in the role, such as purchasing household items or engaging young in recreational activities.
