Training in balance and cognitive exercises will be done online.
The StandingTall team implement a home-based balance exercise program delivered through a tablet computer. Our next research study, “StandingTall-Plus”, includes a cutting-edge brain training program to help people think faster during daily activities. In collaboration with the Black Dog Institute, we offer online cognitive behavioural therapy to address concerns of falling and low mood to those who may benefit from this. The program will be personalised to abilities and circumstances.
In light of the current COVID-19 situation, we have adapted our trial so that we can continue this important research while maintaining the safety of our participants and staff. All previous face-to-face assessments and home-visits will now be conducted remotely using Telehealth methods (video calls).
Participants aged 65+ are sought to volunteer to be a part of the 1-year StandingTall-Plus research program. It is hoped that seniors can benefit from volunteering in our study into fall prevention.
Half of participants will be asked to perform 1-3 hours of the StandingTall-Plus program per week, in the comfort of their own home. Half of participants will be asked to continue with their usual activities. Non-invasive physical and cognitive assessments will be conducted at baseline, 6-month and 12-month time points.
Falls risk assessment conducted remotely using video call at baseline, 6-month and 12-month time.
Volunteers must be over 65, have had a fall in the past 6 months OR be somewhat concerned about falls OR be 80+. Volunteers need to be independent in daily activities. Unfortunately participants that have been diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis or Alzheimers are unable to participate.
Training in balance and cognitive exercises if successful in randomisation into exercise group. Participants do not need to have any prior experience using an iPad or computer as we will provide instruction if required.
