We are currently recruiting volunteer foster carers who have experience with animal handling and behavior and are able to foster the following kind of animals:

Dogs

• Dogs and don't have any of their own dogs
• Dogs with behavioural problems e.g anxious dogs
• Cage confinement

Cats

• Kittens
• Cats with ringworm
• Cats with behavioural problems e.g anxious, timid
• Cage confinement

Please note that to volunteer with Lort Smith you will be required to undertake a Police Check (we pay). If you are not an Australian citizen, you must either be a permanent resident or have a current working visa.

Our minimum age requirement to foster is 18 years of age.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure foster animals are safe, secure, clean and comfortable
• Return foster animals to Lort Smith for check-ups or as required
• Monitor animals for health and behavioural changes and contact staff immediately in the case of any changes
• Contact Adoption Centre staff immediately if any animal escapes
• Feed and water animals in accordance with feeding guide and staff instructions
• Provide at least two hours of quality socialisation with foster animals each day. More if you are working with behaviour modification dogs or cats
• Walk dogs regularly on a lead if directed by Lort Smith staff
• Supervise children with animals at all times
• Ensure other pets are up-to-date with all vaccinations
• Provide medication to animals in accordance with staff instructions
• Follow Foster Care Guidelines and all other guidelines, policies and procedures provided by Lort Smith staff
• Participate in training and development activities relevant to role
• Must be able to transport your foster animals to and from our Adoption Centre in Campbellfield
