Community Pantry Storeroom Assistant

    Communities@Work’s Community Pantry is open from 9 am to 3 pm weekdays at the Tuggeranong Community Centre and the Gungahlin Community Centre. Volunteer shifts for this role are flexible between these hours.

  • Requirements
    • National Police Certificate *
    • Others
    • Working with Children Check *

    • Managing rotations of stock (checking expiry dates and fresh produce quality)
    • Adhering to food safety procedures
    • Receiving food rescue deliveries and taking inventory of products received
    • Choosing and packing agency pickups and coordinating collection of food with various agencies
    • Sweeping and mopping floors in storeroom when needed
    • Repacking bulk food items
    • Labelling packed food/Chinese containers correctly
    • Filling out required paperwork for agency pickups (i.e. Monthly forms, crate tally forms, communication/notes forms (forms may vary depending on site location)
    • Restocking pantry shelves, freezers and fridges
    • Undertaking other duties directed by the Community Intake Liaison Coordinator

    Skills and Experience:
    • Strong communication, listening and people skills
    • Customer service skills
    • Administrative experience
    • Basic computer skills

    • Ability to prioritise and work diligently
    • Comfortable interacting with vulnerable people
    • Warm, friendly, outgoing and people focused

    • Willing to accept the organisation’s vision, mission and values and represent the organisation within the framework

    Additional Requirements
    • Working with Vulnerable People Registration
    • Attendance at a two hour Communities at Work Volunteer Induction
    • Attendance at Care&Share induction/training comprising one three hour session

Communities at Work’s Social Programs provide food and essential services to individuals and families in Canberra who are experiencing hardship. Services include: • A pantry of healthy food, nutritious meals and essential items • Cooking lessons & nutritional advice • Financial support & budgeting advice • Emotional support • Walking program • Clothing program providing clothing & accessories (by appointment) for job interviews, work experience or social events for men and women • Referrals to Communities at Work programs and specialist organisations • Advocacy

Clients are able to 'shop' for their items from a pantry of healthy food, hampers and essential items - either free of charge or for a nominal fee - in a safe, secure and dignified environment. Monthly appointments can be made for budgeting and nutritional advice, and cooking lessons are also available.

Volunteers are the backbone of our community pantry. The program is staffed by a strong team of dedicated volunteers who make this fantastic program possible.
