Turtle Monitoring Volunteer Program - Port Hedland

Care for Hedland Environmental Association

Care For Hedland runs an annual Flatback turtle monitoring volunteer program, where volunteers help out with data collection and conservation awareness. Turtle Monitoring will take place on Cemetery Beach and Pretty Pool Beach, Port Hedland. Volunteers are accepted from 21st October 2020 until 5th February 2021.

Volunteers do not need to have previous experience with turtles but a reasonable level of fitness is required to walk the beaches. Volunteers get the opportunity to observe Flatback turtles returning to the sea, see hatchlings emerge from nests, assist in turtle rescues, observe the nesting process at night and be hands on and assist in the mark/recapture tagging program.

As Care For Hedland is a not-for-profit, volunteers are required to pay $150 per week for the first two weeks and $50 per week after that. Some volunteers stay for a week, others for 2-3 months - it is totally up to you! The volunteer fee covers billeted accommodation with a local Hedland family, transport to the turtle beach/shops, airport pick up/drop off, turtle soft toy, volunteer shirt, Care For Hedland membership, insurance and a donation to Care For Hedland.

Turtle monitoring can be hard work, as volunteers will be walking the beach in hot, humid conditions often at irregular hours as turtle work is tidal-dependent. The program has a great social aspect, as you will have the chance to explore a regional town and get to know townspeople and other volunteers.

Flights and personal fuel costs, food and personal items are not covered by Care For Hedland.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
