About this opportunity: The African Youth Initiative Centres (AYI Centres) is a volunteer run organisation that assists African youths in their educational development through committed face-to-face mentoring, access to educational resources and community-led programs both in Sydney and abroad in Ghana, West Africa. Our aim is to break the cycle of disadvantage by providing young people with access to education and mentoring that will shape their future. In the pursuit of this objective, AYI Centres is looking for a creative and self-motivated volunteer with youth work experience to develop and implement specific African Youth Projects in the Sydney. We are looking for someone with the experience, drive and time to assist this grass-roots organisation.

The role: This volunteer role is ideal for someone with youth work experience with a passion for youth welfare and social issues, specific to the African community. It is also suitable for anyone studying or currently working in the Youth and Community Development field. Reporting to the Projects Manager and AYI Management Board, your role will be as follows: • Assisting the organisation in the development, implementation and coordination of African Youth specific projects and programs • Working effectively with various community partners in relations to current and future programs and projects • Working effectively with young people of African descent and giving them a voice • Networking and liaising with youth, schools and other community and Government organisations • Attending inter agency meetings

Essential criteria: • Current Police Check • Current Working with Children’s Check • Knowledge of the NSW Youth and Community Work sector • Experience in youth/community work with a minimum of 1-year's experience • Experience in the coordination and delivery of youth or social work programs • Minimum Certificate IV in Youth Work or related community development field

Desirable criteria: • Demonstrate personal attributes including the following: being self-motivated, enthusiastic, driven, and a passion for taking initiatives • Ability to network and liaise with relevant stakeholders and community organisations • Passionate about youth welfare and social issues • Good written and verbal communication skills • Ability to engage and build strong relationships with youth • Comes from an African background

Remuneration: This is a volunteer role - all staff are volunteers
