The Purpose of this Role

Volunteer Chaplains have a significant role in the delivery of The Salvation Army Chaplaincy program. With the supervision and guidance of a Chaplain Team Leader, this role is specifically designated to Hospital Chaplaincy / Pastoral Care Visits. The Volunteer Chaplain / Pastoral Care Practitioner will be an integral part of the hospital Chaplaincy team that immediately reports to the Chaplaincy Co-ordinator.

Personal Qualities/Attributes Required for Role

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with diverse groups of people. Ability to communicate and interact with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Ability to demonstrate appropriate delivery of pastoral care for individuals of varying faith frameworks. Demonstrated commitment to own spiritual and personal development. A high level of maturity with the capacity to demonstrate empathy. Ability to operate in and placate complex and stressful situations. Able to work with professional discretion and confidentiality. A respect and willingness to work within the ethos of The Salvation Army. Be ambulant and be able to walk around a hospital precinct.

Role Required Tasks:

  • Provision of pastoral care through working with the supervising Chaplain to determine appropriate workload, responding to individuals/cases as agreed and providing pastoral care to patients, visitors and employees.
  • Provide statistics to Salvation Army Chaplaincy Team Leader.
  • Chaplains to conduct worship and ministry services
  • Refer individuals to other support networks and services.
  • Complete appropriate training to achieve and maintain status of a Chaplain.
  • Where applicable, attend or provide input to team meetings, retreats and other associated events.
  • Committed to the mission and values of The Salvation Army, representing TSA in ways consistent with this.
  • Abide by TSA Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain a ssafe and healthy environment through monitoring and rectifying any health and safety concerns, escalating issues to the supervisor/manager where appropriate.
Qualifications and experience requirements for the Role;

CPE Introductory level then Advanced CPE for Pastoral Care Practitioners. Diploma of Chaplaincy for Chaplains. Enrolled and undertaking Continuing Professional Development. Provide last 12 months CPD. Complete hospital fire and safety training, comply with staff health requirements and hospital accreditation as per hospital guidelines.

Integrity checks will be a requirement of the role.
