Leg Club at Kingston Health Centre

Leg Club

What is a Leg Club? Leg Clubs are social clubs for people with Leg Ulcers (current/past/at risk). The concept is based on the UK model ‘Lindsay Leg Clubs’. It is a unique partnership between the community nursing team and the local community, in which patients are empowered, through a sense of ownership, to become stakeholders in their own treatment. Leg Clubs provide leg ulcer management in a social environment, where patients (members) are treated collectively. The emphasis is on social interaction, participation, empathy and peer support.

What is expected of Volunteers? • Volunteers provide a welcoming atmosphere at their local Leg Club. This will involve ‘meet and greet’ • Volunteers are also involved in patient registers and registration details. • Volunteers are also asked to help patients access tea and coffee, and snacks (these are provided by the Health Centre). • Once the Leg Club becomes more established volunteers may also be asked to organise fundraising events

In centres with an established leg club volunteers have extended their role to include helping to put together newsletters, questionnaires, general information, fundraising letters and information leaflets.

Eastern Shore Health Centre have had a Leg Club operating for a few years and a visit to this service may be organised if desired.

For further information about how these clubs work please access the Lindsay Leg Club web site.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
