About the opportunity

  • The Compliance Officer is responsible for managing OFA's legal, governance and compliance obligations.
  • OFA is 100% volunteer-run and funded by strategic corporate partners, so it is imperative that our legal and governance structures are rigorous, tightly managed and compliant with all legislative obligations.  The Compliance Officer reports to the Chief Operating Officer and has reporting responsibilities to the Board.
  • The Compliance Officer is responsible for managing compliance issues primarily involves observing OFA's reporting obligations to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), as well as to the Australian Taxation Office (as required).
  • In respect of legal and governance issues, the Compliance Officer is responsible for managing the integrity of our contractual sponsorship agreements with all business partners, and will be tasked with reviewing these sponsorship agreements on an annual basis and seeking legal advice on them where appropriate.  The Compliance Officer may also be asked to second-counsel amendments to OFA's internal policies, or provide guidance to other members of the National Executive on people management and volunteer safety.
  • The Compliance Officer is also the primary point of contact with OFA's pro bono legal services providers, and is expected to liaise with third parties to brief out legal work, and to provide instructions to our pro bono partners. Additionally, the Compliance Officer is responsible for:

    * informing the OFA Board and the National Executive of OFA's reporting obligations and governance risk issues, and appropriately managing those issues; and * reviewing and developing policies and procedures with other OFA volunteers.

About you Required skills and experience

  • strong legal and contractual drafting skills;
  • Familiarity with charity, commercial and contract law, and corporate governance;
  • the ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills - required for communicating with OFA's external lawyers, and reporting to the COO, the CEO and the Board;
  • an impeccable history of reliability and accountability.

Desired skills and experience

  • a law degree and admission to practise (admission in Australia is preferred, but not necessary);
  • Experience working in an LGBTIQ organisation or with the LGBTIQ community;
