Program Volunteers: Have fun supporting Refugee & Asylum Seeker Children- 1 day per month (Saturday)

Australian Refugee Volunteers
Logo for Australian Refugee Volunteers

Join us and have fun and participate in program days with children from a refugee and asylum seeker background.   We collect kids from their homes and take them to participate in joint group activities with other volunteers and kids.  Activities are in Western Sydney near our clients, but can include beach trips, horse riding, ice skating, art & crafts at a park, drama workshops and lots of other great activities to make them feel included. Come and join in making families feel included.

We run 4 programs (all on the same Saturday each month) broken up loosely by age range of children between 6 and 18.  You choose your preference for programs at our orientation program day, compulsory for all new volunteers.

  • A full list of orientation days is listed on our website.
  • A full list of program days is listed on our website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet families when collecting children from their homes
  • Participate in social activities while being buddied up with children aged between 6 and 18 from a refugee background,  supervise and ensure they have a great day out while learning about teamwork,  inclusion and belonging.
  • Be reliable and time efficient.  Program days start at set times and we need to collect and travel to program locations on time.
  • Obtain a Working With Children Check (Free  online at Service NSW website) before attending first program day.

Desirable

  • Willing to use your own car and drive.  We collect kids and take them to the activity  location where we enjoy the day as a group, and then drop kids back to their  homes.  Volunteers can pair up with lifts, but we always need drivers so if you can borrow or have a car and assist then this is ideal.
  • Online savvy.  Our sign in and debrief process is via an online administration system.  Volunteers will need to register and then log into RSVP and feedback on programs.
  • Willing to commit one Saturday a month to volunteering (minimum 4-6 programs a year)

Australian Refugee Volunteers (ARV) is an entirely volunteer-run non-religious and apolitical organisation that runs exciting programs for children from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds in Sydney. We organise programs to take our clients out for fun days to give them these opportunities that their families might not necessarily be able to provide.

No volunteering experience is necessary, just a positive attitude and a great sense of fun! Volunteering at ARV is a rewarding and fulfilling experience: not only will you work with people from a variety of backgrounds, you will directly see the impact of your work and meet other like-minded people!

ARV carries $20m Public Liability insurance, Volunteer Accident insurance and 'Motor Non-Owned insurance for volunteers' vehicles.
