Volunteer Tutor For Refugee and Migrant Children

We are looking for Volunteer Tutors to assist children from migrant and refugee backgrounds. We are a non-profit organization who have worked in Afghanistan and Australia for over 20 years. Please refer to our website at for further insight.

In this role, you should be an excellent communicator with a passion to mentor children from disadvantaged backgrounds through education. You will be a tutor for a small group of children aged between 8 and 12 years old. Volunteer hours will typically be 5pm-7pm after school at our venue in Marsfield. Days of operation are flexible and may include weekends.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Assisting children from migrant and refugee backgrounds with their school work, including homework and assignments.
  • Be a trusted, friendly and understanding mentor for migrant/refugee children.
  • Ask students about specific topics or subject areas that are giving them trouble or that warrant further exploration
  • Review recent homework assignment and test feedback, and work through problems or questions that the student did not answer correctly
  • Employ proven study aides to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes
  • Take notes during tutoring sessions so you can follow up with the student later
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about trouble areas or any other issue that requires attention

Requirements:

  • A qualification or studying towards a qualification in Youth Work, Community Services, Primary/Secondary Education, *Global Studies or similar is desired.
  • Experience working with children is desired but not essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal English.
  • Good literacy and numeracy level. School work may include other areas such as science and art.
  • You must hold a current Working With Children’s Check (Volunteer).

Ability to pass a police check.
