Walking companion, with a car, needed for an older woman in the Inner West on Monday mornings

Tom Foster Community Care

Tom Foster Community Care in Newtown is looking for a reliable volunteer to accompany an older woman to go on weekly walks on Monday mornings.   A car is required so that you can  go walking in different locations, such as Blackwattle Bay in Glebe.  The client is in her 80's and is physically fit.  As she has early stage dementia she cannot go for walks unaccompanied. This would suit someone who is comfortable communicating with and is sensitive to the needs of someone living with dementia.  This is a wonderful opportunity for someone as the client is a truly lovely woman and it this will become a bright spot in your week. The Tom Foster Social Support service provides support to older people so they can remain living independently in their own homes.

Essential requirements from our volunteers:

  • Have own fully comprehensively insured car and current driver’s licence
  • Have morning availability on either Monday, Wednesday or Friday
  • Be available for 1 - 2 hours per week for at least 6 months
  • Be patient, friendly and reliable
  • Have a good level of spoken English

Further details:

  • The volunteer is not required to provide physical support.
  • The volunteer will be introduced to the client to ensure compatibility
  • The client lives in Dulwich Hill
  • Volunteers are reimbursed for travel expenses
  • Volunteers are supported by the Social Support Program Officer
  • Training is available if required

There are many benefits of volunteering with Tom Foster Community Care, such as:

  • Meeting new people who share common interests and ideas;
  • Learning new skills;
  • Involvement in the local community; and
  • Making a difference to the lives of our seniors.

Prospective volunteers will need to attend an initial meeting (during office hours) with the Social Support Program Officer. Please note that volunteers will need to undergo a Criminal Record Check (which we organise) and must provide 2 referees.

We're so grateful for our volunteers and we hope you can become part of our wonderful team.

Please contact Leanne on 02 9392 5187 for more information or send an application through this site to tell us about your skills and experience.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
