As our service provides PEER SUPPORT, It is essential you have lived experience of being a parent or guardian of a daughter or son who has had or is still having difficulties with alcohol or drug use. Expressions of interest can only be taken for those who meet this criterion

Have you reached a point in your life where you feel emotionally and practically ready to use your personal experience to help other parents who have just started the sometimes long and often traumatic journey? Perhaps this role is right for you. Have you reached a point in your life where despite the worry and anxiety you’ve managed to keep yourself and other important relationships intact by creating and maintaining healthy boundaries and by doing the things that keep you healthy and well? Are you emotionally ready and resilient enough to use your personal experience and wisdom to help other parents who find themselves at the start of this arduous journey?

The role of the PARENT PEER VOLUNTEER is to provide telephone peer support to parents calling the service in distress about their son or daughter's drug or alcohol use.

As our service provides PEER SUPPORT, It is essential you have lived experience of being a parent or guardian of a daughter or son who has had or is still having difficulties with alcohol or drug use. Expressions of interest can only be taken for those who meet this criterion.

Parent Peer Volunteers provide one 5hr shift per week from the comfort of their own home on the roster providing telephone support to parent callers. Shifts rage from 8am-1pm; 1pm – 6pm or 6pm to 10pm. Your confidentiality is maintained at all times and your number never given out to callers. Often you may not receive any calls within your allotted shift and it is rare to get more than 3 calls per shift.

Other opportunities may include providing face to face support in Perth’s Drug Court and/or facilitating parent peer support groups. Full induction training is provided and volunteers are provided opportunities for ongoing training and support.

You would be joining a well-established service with over 18 years of experience of providing peer support to distressed parents and of managing volunteers. We are a supportive team who look after each other and who also like to have a belly laugh and have fun. Volunteers often report feeling as though they received far more than they gave with the role being very rewarding.

At this stage we are likely to hold our next round of recruitment and training mid 2020 but please call/email us if you would like an application form and articulate CLEARLY that you are a PARENT who has supported a child with alcohol or drug use issues. We do sometimes provide out of session training as and when a situation arises where new volunteers are required.Due to the large volume of interest we receive, we may not be able to respond to your expression of interest if you do not specify you have the required lived experience.
