The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre Inc.

Assist our language students to practice speaking, listening and pronunciation. Depending on students ability, mentoring may involve discussing shopping, dealing with tradesmen or even our political system. The commitment is one hour per student per week through the school term.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist our language students to practice speaking, listening and pronunciation with some reading and writing.
  • Students express their desire to be able to join in to the community, for people to be able to understand them and vice versa. (Often in class they have good language skills but lack confidence to speak outside classes at the shops, schools and in their neighbourhoods. etc.)
  • Usually the mentoring is general conversation about life in Boroondara, Victoria, Australia etc.
  • Depending on their language level mentoring may involve discussing shopping, dealing with tradesmen or even our political system.

Skills and Experience: If you have empathy for English as a second language students who are trying to learn new language/culture and find a place in Australia, and feel that you can converse, listen and correct pronunciation, read a newspaper article and discuss or explain- using a dictionary or dictionary application on your phone, then you have the skills and experience required for this position.

Note:

  • The commitment is one hour per student per week through the school term. ( We break for school holidays).
  • Students and mentors take breaks from mentoring for holidays or other committments when necessary.
  • Mentors and students usually meet in the KewNLC Sparechair cafe and have access to the coordinator and our language library.
  • Mentors are also offered the chance to join our student excursions if they wish.
