Humour is an important part of the work and sometimes helps to put it all in perspective. Laurel Hospice is a place where laughter is often heard along with tears and a lot of talking and reminiscing as people use this valuable time to ensure things are not left unsaid.

The role of volunteers in Palliative care is to help the person "Live" until their last moments. Volunteers play an important role in making the environment as homely as possible whilst supporting patients and visitors. Sometimes just sitting with someone is of great comfort. Being available to make a special drink, help write some overdue letters, listen attentively, and provide a caring touch. Provide comfort and support to families, play with children, help with patients' personal laundry, arrange flowers, read to patients and offer hand massage once trained.

Should have good listening skills, be emotionally mature, friendly, willing to learn, caring, and resilient.

The application process is an interview, 3-day palliative care training program, orientation (note: final forms incl. J&P, Guideline Policies, ID card, free parking permit card and apron given at orientation), 3 x buddy sessions and a 3 month probation period. There is annual WHS mandatory training and ongoing quarterly meetings.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
