About I Am Someone 

IAS is a volunteer-run Australian charity that has been supporting communities in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone for more than 20 years. We work with local communities and partners to deliver practical projects across education, health, livelihoods and community development. 

As IAS continues to develop, we are looking to strengthen our governance, risk management and organisational systems and are seeking an experienced professional to join our Board. 

The Role 

We are seeking a Board Member with strong governance and risk management experience to help IAS undertake a comprehensive review of its current governance framework and establish stronger systems for the future. 

This is an opportunity to use your professional expertise to make a meaningful contribution to a long-established charity, while helping shape the systems and structures that will support IAS's continued growth. 

The role will involve both contributing as a Board Director and providing specialist governance and risk expertise to the organisation. 

Key Areas of Contribution 

The successful candidate will work with the Board to: 

• Undertake a broad review of IAS's current governance structure, policies and practices. 

• Identify governance gaps, priorities and opportunities for improvement. 

• Develop a practical Delegations of Authority framework, clarifying decision-making responsibilities and approval limits. 

• Establish an organisation-wide risk management framework and risk register. 

• Strengthen Board oversight, accountability and decision-making processes. 

• Review and strengthen key organisational policies, controls and compliance processes. 

• Help clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Board, office bearers, committees and operational volunteers. 

• Support the Board to develop governance systems that are appropriate for a small, volunteer-run charity operating internationally. 

The successful candidate will also participate fully as a Board Member, contributing to strategy, organisational oversight and broader Board decision-making. 

About You 

We are looking for someone with demonstrated experience in areas such as: 

• Governance and Board oversight 

• Risk management 

• Compliance 

• Internal controls 

• Organisational policy and frameworks 

• Not-for-profit or charity governance 

Experience with the ACNC, Australian charities, international organisations or volunteer-run organisations would be highly desirable. 

You will be comfortable identifying gaps, asking constructive questions and helping develop practical solutions. You will be able to balance good governance with the realities of a small, volunteer-led organisation and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy. 

Formal qualifications in governance, risk, compliance, law, accounting or a related field are desirable, but practical experience and sound judgement are equally important.

This is a voluntary, unpaid Board position. Board meetings are held monthly, with some additional involvement expected during the initial governance and risk review.
