Board Members (Multiple Opportunities)

About the opportunity
CSCA is entering an important period of organisational transformation and is seeking several skilled and committed people to join our Board.
Over the next 12 months, we will be focused on implementing recommendations from an independent strategic and operational review, strengthening our volunteer structure, improving systems and governance, and reducing reliance on a small number of individuals.
We are recruiting through a single campaign for:
- Treasurer
- Secretary
- Ordinary Board Members
We are particularly interested in building a Board with complementary experience across:
Accounting & finance | NFP operations | Organisational transformation & change | Project/program management | Governance | Legal & risk | Digital systems & process improvement | People & volunteer management | Fundraising, grants & partnerships | Veterinary & animal welfare
Animal rescue experience is desirable, but not essential.
We want to be upfront about what joining CSCA's Board means.
This is not a Board where members attend meetings, provide advice and leave implementation to somebody else.
For the next 12 months in particular, Board members will be expected to actively help strengthen the organisation.
Depending on your skills, that might mean leading a project, developing a process, improving a system, building or supporting a volunteer team, developing policy, contributing to grant applications or using your professional expertise to solve an organisational problem.
Our goal isn't to create a permanently overworked Board. Quite the opposite. We want people who can help us build capacity, delegate effectively and create systems that don't depend on individual volunteers holding everything together.
About you
We're looking for people who bring professional expertise and the willingness to use it.
You'll ideally be someone who:
- has experience managing people, projects, operations or organisations;
- is proactive, curious and able to work autonomously;
- can take a problem or project from discussion through to delivery;
- communicates with empathy and high emotional intelligence;
- works constructively through disagreement and competing priorities;
- is comfortable respectfully challenging existing practices;
- can make decisions within their area without continual direction; and
- has genuine capacity to follow through on the work they commit to.
Previous Board experience is highly regarded. However, we're equally interested in what you've delivered, not simply the positions you've held.
We're particularly interested in people who understand the realities of working with passionate, busy and sometimes exhausted volunteers.
Treasurer
A qualified accountant would be fantastic, although this is not essential.
We're looking for someone with strong financial-management skills, ideally including bookkeeping, BAS preparation and NFP finance, who can help manage CSCA's current financial responsibilities while also improving our financial processes and resilience.
Secretary
Our Secretary supports statutory governance, Board records and minutes.
We're particularly interested in candidates who can bring broader governance, administration and organisational-systems capability to the role.
What you'll get from the role
This is an opportunity to bring your professional experience to a well-established local charity at a significant point in its development.
You'll have the opportunity to:
- make tangible improvements to an organisation directly supporting hundreds of cats each year;
- help shape CSCA's next stage of growth;
- work alongside passionate volunteers with extensive organisational knowledge;
- apply your professional expertise to real operational challenges; and
- help build a stronger, more sustainable volunteer organisation.
We're asking applicants to approach this as an approximately 12-month commitment to organisational transformation.
Board appointments are subject to CSCA's constitutional processes. Those who wish to continue beyond the initial transformation period will have the opportunity to nominate for ongoing Board service.
Canberra/Queanbeyan applicants are preferred so you can meet our volunteers, visit our Crace facility and participate in activities in person. However, remote applicants with the right skills are very welcome to apply.
A Working with Vulnerable People registration is welcomed but is not essential at application.
