No More Butts is looking for a PR Coordinator to help raise awareness of our work and build stronger relationships with journalists and media organisations.

This is an opportunity to help identify the stories within our research, advocacy, campaigns and community work and turn them into media opportunities. You will help No More Butts reach new audiences through news coverage, interviews, commentary and other forms of earned media.

Working as part of the Marketing Communications function, you will work closely with the Marketing Communications Lead and other communications volunteers to identify opportunities, develop media material and support media engagement.

Key duties

  • Identify newsworthy stories, announcements, research, campaigns and activities within No More Butts
  • Monitor relevant news and identify opportunities for No More Butts to contribute expert commentary
  • Research and maintain relevant media contacts and media lists
  • Develop and maintain relationships with journalists and media organisations
  • Draft media releases, media pitches, statements, talking points and other media material
  • Pitch relevant stories and commentary opportunities to journalists
  • Coordinate media enquiries and facilitate appropriate responses
  • Identify opportunities for interviews, opinion pieces, expert commentary and other media coverage
  • Help prepare spokespeople for interviews and media opportunities
  • Monitor media coverage involving No More Butts and relevant tobacco, litter, plastics and environmental issues
  • Maintain a record of media activity and coverage
  • Share media opportunities, coverage and insights with the Marketing Communications Lead and Working Group
  • Work with other Marketing Communications volunteers to ensure media opportunities are supported by relevant website, social media and digital content
  • Identify opportunities to use No More Butts' research, policy work and advocacy to generate broader public interest
  • Contribute ideas for campaigns and communications activities that could attract media attention

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone who understands what makes a story interesting to journalists and enjoys finding opportunities to get important issues in front of the right audiences.

Useful skills and experience include:

  • Experience in public relations, media relations, journalism, communications or a related field
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and persuasively
  • An understanding of what makes a story newsworthy
  • Confidence communicating with journalists and other external stakeholders
  • Good research skills and an ability to identify relevant media opportunities
  • Ability to develop professional relationships and communicate appropriately with different audiences
  • Good judgement when dealing with sensitive or potentially contentious issues
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with other volunteers
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • An interest in environmental issues, advocacy, tobacco control, plastics or community campaigns

Professional PR or media experience is welcome but not essential. We are particularly interested in people who understand how media works and can identify the story within an issue or piece of work.
