Communications Manager (Volunteer)

About the role
IWCE is a volunteer-run charity helping households and community organisations in Sydney’s Inner West go solar, add batteries, and electrify their homes. Since 2017 we've helped install over 550 solar systems and 170 batteries. Our mission is to help households take action on climate change by installing solar energy and getting off gas.
We're looking for a volunteer Communications Manager to keep our public voice consistent and active across our main channels.
Commitment: 1 to 5 hours per week, flexible, mostly remote. But if you can do more hours, all the better!
What you'd do
Social media
- Plan, create and post to IWCE's social channels
- Share member stories, event promos, and practical energy tips
- Monitor and respond to comments and messages
Newsletter
- Produce the regular member newsletter
- Gather content from volunteers and the committee
- Track opens and clicks, and adjust what we send
Website blog and events
- Publish blog posts and event listings produced by the rest of our team
- Keep event details current and accurate
Partner communications
- Keep in touch with aligned organisations, councils, and community groups
- Coordinate joint promotion of events and campaigns
Who you'd work with
You'd work with our Events Manager, the Project Manager and the committee on communications for upcoming events. Most content ideas come from what's already happening across the organisation, so the role is collaborative rather than solo. We’re a friendly team!
We'd also love you to join the IWCE committee, which meets monthly. It's optional, but committee members get more say in where the organisation heads.
What we're looking for
- Clear, plain-English writing. No jargon, no sales language
- Comfortable with social platforms and a basic email or website tool (we'll show you ours)
- Organised and able to work independently
- Interest in climate action, renewable energy and the Inner West community
- We'd like someone who can commit for at least 6 months
- Located around Sydney -
Formal comms experience is welcome but not essential. We care more about clarity and consistency.
What you get
- A visible role in a local charity with real community impact
- Portfolio work across four channels
- A supportive volunteer team and flexible hours
- Playing your part in the local transition to 100% renewables.
