Volunteer Front-End Web Designer & Developer

Rethink Australia Foundation Ltd is a youth-led environmental organisation helping schools and students reduce waste through education, technology and practical action.

As Rethink Australia grows, we are seeking a creative and technically capable Volunteer Front-End Web Designer & Developer to improve our public website and digital presence.

This role combines visual web design, user experience and front-end implementation. It focuses on Rethink Australia’s public-facing website rather than back-end systems or the Refugo web application.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop responsive website pages and reusable components
• Improve page layouts, navigation and the overall user experience
• Translate approved content and brand direction into polished web pages
• Maintain consistent typography, spacing, colours and visual presentation
• Ensure pages work effectively across desktop, tablet and mobile devices
• Improve accessibility, usability and basic website performance
• Add and update approved content, images, forms and calls to action
• Test pages, identify interface issues and resolve front-end bugs
• Collaborate with content writers, graphic designers and communications volunteers
• Maintain organised source files and clear documentation
• Use approved development, review and publishing processes
• Recommend practical improvements to the website’s design and structure

About you

We welcome applications from emerging and experienced web designers and front-end developers.

Relevant skills may include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design, user interface design, accessibility, content management systems, design systems, Git or modern front-end frameworks.

The successful applicant will have strong attention to detail, sound visual judgement and the ability to create clear, professional and user-friendly digital experiences.

Applicants should be comfortable working from approved content and brand direction, receiving feedback, testing their work and meeting agreed deadlines.

Previous professional experience is highly regarded but not essential. University students, recent graduates, emerging developers and experienced professionals are encouraged to apply. Applicants should provide a portfolio, GitHub profile or examples of relevant work where available.

Relationship to other technology roles

This role focuses on the design and front-end development of Rethink Australia’s public-facing website. The Full-Stack & PWA Developer focuses on application functionality and technical systems, while content and design volunteers may provide written and visual assets.

All material changes must be reviewed and approved before publication. The volunteer must not publish unapproved claims, partner information, personal information or organisational announcements.

Location and commitment

The role is based in Sydney and is online or remote friendly. Most work can be completed remotely, with occasional online or in-person collaboration where mutually convenient.

Approximately three to five hours per month is anticipated for an initial period of up to six months. Work is flexible, with deadlines agreed in advance for each task.
