People For Nature is a citizen-led environmental charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Our mission is to inform, empower, and reconnect people with nature through accessible climate and biodiversity education, participative workshops, conservation action, and citizen science.

Position Overview

People For Nature is seeking an experienced finance professional to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer. This is a governance and oversight role responsible for ensuring the financial integrity, sustainability, and compliance of the organisation.

As a key member of the Board, the Treasurer provides strategic financial guidance, oversees financial governance, and supports informed decision-making to ensure the long-term sustainability of our mission. This is a volunteer, board-level position suited to someone with demonstrated experience in financial governance within the Australian not-for-profit or charity sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide financial oversight and governance in line with ACNC requirements and Australian regulatory standards.
  • Oversee the organisation’s financial management, ensuring transparency, accountability, and appropriate financial controls.
  • Present clear and accurate financial reports to the Board, including income and expenditure statements, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Support the development and monitoring of annual budgets and financial strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, taxation, and reporting obligations. Monitor financial risk and advise the Board on financial sustainability and planning.
  • Oversee banking arrangements and financial policies. Provide financial input into grant applications, partnerships, and fundraising activities.
  • Support the Board and Executive Team in strategic decision-making through financial insight.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Formal qualifications in accounting, finance, or a related discipline (CA, CPA or equivalent experience strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in financial governance and reporting at Board or senior management level of a charity or not-for-profit organisation.
  • Strong understanding of Australian not-for-profit or charity financial compliance, including ACNC obligations.
  • Experience preparing or overseeing financial statements and budgets.
  • Experience with the Xero accounting system.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to commit approximately 5–8 hours per month, including Board meetings.

  • Understanding of environmental or community-based organisations.
  • Experience supporting grant-funded organisations.
