About I AM SOMEONE
I AM SOMEONE is an Australian grassroots charity working across Uganda, Kenya and Sierra Leone to provide education, safe housing, food security and community-led development for children and families facing extreme disadvantage.
Founded by Steve Argent over 20 years ago, IAS has quietly created extraordinary long-term impact, yet very few people outside of its direct community know the full story.
We are now entering a growth phase focused on increasing awareness, recognition and national visibility, and this role is at the heart of that mission.
Purpose of the Role
This role exists to amplify the story, impact and recognition of I AM SOMEONE and its founder, Steve Argent, through:
- media features
- award nominations
- storytelling campaigns
- national recognition pathways
- and strategic publicity
You will be the person who turns real impact into recognised impact — ensuring that the work being done on the ground is seen, honoured and celebrated.
What You’ll Be Working With
You will not be starting from scratch.
You’ll be provided with:
- campaign concepts
- story ideas
- impact stats and case studies
- a developed awards & media strategy
- internal support for content, approvals and coordination
Your role is to lead the execution - pitching, submitting, following up and building momentum.
Key Responsibilities
Media & Publicity
- Identify and pitch IAS stories to local, state and national media
- Draft and distribute media releases
- Build relationships with journalists, producers and publications
- Coordinate interviews, features and publicity opportunities
Awards & Recognition Strategy
- Lead the charity’s awards and recognition strategy
- Prepare and submit nominations for community, state and national awards
- Coordinate support letters, testimonials and evidence packs
- Track timelines, deadlines and submission cycles
Storytelling & Impact Assets
- Shape stories into award- and media-ready formats
- Assist in developing impact summaries, one-pagers and mini case studies
- Support the creation of simple media kits and recognition packs
Momentum Building
- Track wins, nominations and features
- Repurpose awards and media into content for website, social and donor communications
- Build a growing recognition profile for IAS nationally
Skills & Experience
You might have experience in:
- PR, communications, journalism or media
- Grant writing, awards or submissions
- Marketing, storytelling or copywriting
- Or you may simply be an excellent writer with strong organisational skills and a passion for social impact
- Formal qualifications are not required, what matters is your ability to communicate clearly, manage timelines, and tell powerful stories.
Time Commitment
- Flexible and remote.
- Estimated 15 hours per month, increasing during major submission periods.
- Work can be done on your own schedule.
