Volunteer Energy Coach

Collective Power Boroondara (CPB)

About the role

Collective Power Boroondara (CPB) is a not-for-profit, member-owned energy cooperative helping local households save money on their energy bills while reducing carbon emissions. We are seeking Volunteer Energy Coaches to support Boroondara residents to understand their energy bills, access fairer and greener energy plans, and feel confident navigating an increasingly complex energy system. This is practical, people-centred volunteering that combines climate action, cost-of-living relief, and genuine community connection — right here in Boroondara.

We value consistency, not perfection — you don’t need to be an energy expert to make a real difference.

What you’ll do

As a Volunteer Energy Coach, you will:

  • Support households (in person, by phone, or online) to review their electricity and gas bills
  • Use the Victorian Government’s free Victorian Energy Compare tool to identify cheaper and greener energy plans
  • Explain options clearly and respectfully, helping residents feel confident to switch if they choose
  • Record outcomes securely and follow simple, structured processes
  • Optionally assist at local community events, information sessions, or outreach activities

This is not a sales role. CPB is independent and member-owned — your role is to inform, support, and empower.

Skills and experience

You don’t need specialist energy knowledge. We’re looking for people who bring:

  • Strong interpersonal skills — empathy, active listening, and clear communication
  • A genuine desire to help others and give back to the community
  • Confidence with basic digital tools (email, web browsing, simple systems)
  • Reliability and care with process and privacy
  • Familiarity with Victorian Energy Compare, or willingness to learn quickly

Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome. Multilingual skills and lived experience supporting diverse communities are highly valued.

Training and support

CPB provides:

  • A structured induction and practical, hands-on training
  • Step-by-step guides, scripts, and workflows
  • Ongoing support from experienced volunteers and CPB coordinators
  • Opportunities to build energy literacy and learn about renewable energy, consumer energy resources (CER), and emerging energy trends

You’ll be supported to grow in confidence — learning together is part of the role.

Why volunteer with CPB?

Volunteering as an Energy Coach offers:

  • Direct climate action — help households reduce emissions through real, measurable change
  • Cost-of-living impact — average household savings of around $500 per year
  • Skills and learning — build confidence in energy literacy, digital tools, and community engagement
  • Connection and enjoyment — meet like-minded locals and be part of a friendly, supportive team
  • Purpose and pride — see the tangible impact of your time, one household at a time

Many volunteers describe the role as practical, hopeful, and genuinely rewarding.

Time commitment

  • Around 8 hours per week (ideal), with flexibility depending on your availability
  • Time can be spread across shorter sessions
  • Mix of work-from-home (phone/online) and occasional face-to-face support
  • We’ll work with you to find a rhythm that fits your life
