About the Role

We are seeking a Volunteer Head of Development to lead the technical delivery of Karming from build through to launch.

This role is hands-on and leadership-focused. You will be responsible for turning a fully defined product specification into a working platform, coordinating volunteer developers, and ensuring the system is built exactly as designed, without ethical drift.

This is not a symbolic title — it is a real leadership role with real responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Own the technical architecture and development direction

Recruit, lead and coordinate volunteer developers (backend, frontend, mobile)

Ensure the platform is built according to strict, pre-defined specifications

Protect the platform from:

Algorithmic creep

Engagement optimisation

Shortcuts that compromise ethics

Make pragmatic technical decisions within a lean, volunteer-driven environment

Oversee:

Backend systems (feeds, ledgers, messaging, moderation)

Web and mobile apps

Infrastructure and deployment approach

Work closely with the founder on milestones and blockers (no micromanagement)

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

Strong experience in software development (full-stack or backend preferred)

Experience leading or mentoring other developers

Solid understanding of system architecture and data integrity

Ability to make calm, ethical technical decisions under constraint

Comfortable working in a volunteer, mission-driven environment

Highly desirable:

Experience with:

React / React Native

Node.js / TypeScript

PostgreSQL

Cloud infrastructure

Interest in ethical tech, digital wellbeing, or alternative social platforms

Previous startup, open-source, or community project experience
