Mechanic
We are looking for a volunteer with mechanical experience to help maintain the Hunter Wetlands Centre’s small fleet of utility vehicles, including our 6-seater visitor transport vehicle and 2-seater work utility. These vehicles play a vital role in supporting daily conservation work, education programs, and visitor services across our 43-hectare Ramsar-listed wetlands. By keeping them safe, reliable, and well-maintained, you’ll be helping our staff and 160+ volunteers continue their essential work restoring habitat, supporting wildlife, and welcoming thousands of visitors each year.
Key Duties
Conduct routine checks and general maintenance on utility vehicles (battery, tyres, brakes, fluids, belts, lights, etc.).
Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and carry out simple repairs where appropriate.
Identify any major or specialist mechanical problems and advise when external contractors are required.
Keep basic maintenance records and notify staff of any safety concerns.
Provide guidance to staff and volunteers on safe vehicle care and basic checks.
Skills & Experience Needed
Experience in vehicle maintenance, mechanical repair, or a related trade (qualified or unqualified).
Ability to diagnose common mechanical issues and perform general repairs.
Understanding of basic WHS principles and a commitment to safe work practices.
Ability to work independently or alongside our maintenance team.
Reliability, good communication, and a positive, team-focused attitude.
We welcome retired tradespeople, hobby mechanics, or anyone with practical mechanical skills who would like to contribute.
