Organisation description:
EdConnect Australia trains and supports community volunteers to provide mentoring and learning support to students in local schools. This program aims to give students extra guidance, build their life skills and confidence, and act as a safety net for those who might be struggling to realize their potential. Volunteers, drawn from various backgrounds, meet face-to-face with students to build supportive relationships and assist with core skill development, such as literacy and numeracy.

Learning support: Volunteers help students with core skills, like reading and math, to supplement formal classroom learning.

Mentoring and guidance: The program focuses on equipping young people with life skills and building their self-esteem and confidence.

Mentor Volunteer:
Position description:
EdConnect mentors support students who are at risk of not reaching their full educational potential. Using their listening skills and life experience, mentors build positive, trusting relationships and provide one-on-one social and emotional support outside the classroom.
What you will do:
- Provide one hour of mentoring each week during school terms.
- Build trust and form a positive relationship with the student.
- Teach social skills and offer emotional support.
- Choose activities together - chatting, games, crafts, sports or creative projects.
Time commitment:
- Minimum of one hour per week (Monday to Friday between 8 AM - 3 PM)
- A minimum of one year (ensure students receive consistent and meaningful support)
Learning Support Volunteers (LSVs):
Position description:
Learning Support Volunteers (LSVs) assist students and teachers for at least one hour each week. They bring patience, positivity, and support to help students stay engaged, build skills, and reach their learning goals while being valued members of the school community.
What you will do:
Common roles include:
- Assisting students with their learning in the classroom.
- Supporting small groups with literacy or numeracy activities.
- Listening to students read.
Other opportunities may involve:
- Helping in the school library, canteen, or breakfast club.
- Supporting specialist programs or projects.
Time commitment:
- Minimum one hour per week (Monday to Friday between 8 AM - 3PM)
- A minimum of six months (schools can plan and integrate volunteer support effectively into their timetables)
