Board Member
Are you passionate about the environment?
Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia (HWCA) is a community-owned not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation, restoration, and enjoyment of wetlands. Located on a 45-hectare Ramsar-listed site in Shortland, Newcastle, the Centre has transformed from former rugby fields into a thriving ecosystem, recognised internationally as a model of community-driven restoration.
HWCA welcomes over 25,000 visitors and 7,000 students annually and is supported by more than 170 volunteers. Its work spans environmental education, habitat restoration, citizen science, and community engagement, reflecting over 40 years of collaboration and stewardship.
The Role
The Strategic Partnerships & Business Development board role provides guidance and advocacy to help strengthen HWCA’s partnerships and sponsorship program.
Working closely with the General Manager and supported by the Board, the role helps identify and nurture relationships that enhance HWCA’s profile, sustainability, and community impact. This position is well-suited to someone who enjoys connecting people and organisations for a good cause, rather than day-to-day fundraising work.
What you will do in this role:
- Offer strategic advice and support to the General Manager and Board on partnership and sponsorship opportunities.
- Help connect HWCA with potential corporate, community, or government partners within your network.
- Help HWCA nurture key partner relationships
- Attend selected events or meetings (as convenient) to represent HWCA.
- Attend and contribute to monthly Board meetings.
What we're looking for:
- Experience or interest in partnerships, sponsorship, fundraising, or business development (corporate, government, or not-for-profit).
- Established networks within the Hunter region or willingness to develop them.
- Strategic thinker with good communication and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to HWCA’s mission and values, and an enthusiasm for environmental conservation and community engagement.
