Head of Delegation (HOD) – South Australia

The Head of Delegation (HOD) leads and manages the state team attending the 2026 Special Olympics National Games in Melbourne. This pivotal volunteer role provides leadership, coordination, and administrative support to ensure athletes, coaches, and support staff are well-prepared, safe, and supported throughout the Games journey. You’ll oversee logistics, communication, and operations before, during, and after the Games, working closely with Special Olympics Australia (SOA), the Games Organising Committee, and families.
Key Responsibilities Pre-Games • Manage and support team officials to prepare athletes and communicate with families • Coordinate team training camp, uniforms, paperwork, travel, and accommodation • Liaise with SOA and Head Coaches regularly • Assist with team fundraising and track athlete levy payments During the Games • Lead the team delegation on-site in Melbourne • Coordinate logistics, schedules, and team needs • Support coaches, medical staff, and officials, ensuring athlete welfare and adherence to 1:4 support ratios • Attend briefings and daily coordination meetings Post-Games • Complete evaluations and reports for all officials • Submit a written report to SOA within six weeks • Attend a debrief with SOA
Skills and Attributes • Strong administration, communication, and organisational skills • Demonstrated people management, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills • Excellent team leadership with ability to delegate effectively • Proven ability to work under pressure with limited resources and tight timelines • Understanding of the needs of athletes with an intellectual disability • Physically fit and able to sustain long hours across multiple consecutive days
Experience and Education Essential: • Experience organising travelling teams • Experience working with people with an intellectual disability Desirable: • Previous involvement with Special Olympics
Screening / Training Requirements • Registered Special Olympics Australia Volunteer • Working with Children Check • Current First Aid / CPR Certificate
