Electrical Repair Shop Assistant (Summer Hill)

Do you have electrical repair skills and want to put them to good use? The Bower is seeking a volunteer electrician to help boost capacity in our Electrical Repair Shop at Summer Hill, working alongside our skilled repairer Andrew. This is a rewarding role that helps keep appliances out of landfill, supports our community, and passes on repair knowledge.

Key Duties As a volunteer in our Electrical Repair Shop, you will: • Carry out common electrical repairs such as replacing power cables, plugs, switches, lamp bayonets, and other fittings. • Troubleshoot and repair small household appliances such as lamps, heaters, fans, and kitchen items. • Safety test and tag all repaired items to ensure compliance and customer safety. • Assist Andrew on Tuesdays and Thursdays to meet growing demand for electrical repairs. • Provide cover when Andrew is unavailable (especially during school holidays). • Maintain a safe, compliant, and well-organised repair workspace. • Engage with customers, explain repair options, and encourage a “repair, don’t replace” mindset.

Skills and Experience Needed

We welcome volunteers with: • Formal electrical qualifications (essential for safety and compliance). • Practical skills in repairing small appliances and household electrical fittings. • Experience in test and tag procedures for electrical items. • A strong understanding of electrical safety standards and safe workshop practices. • Clear communication skills for engaging with the public and providing repair advice. • An interest in sustainability and waste reduction.
