Volunteer Accountant / Bookkeeper (Not-for-Profit | DGR charity)

Oncology Massage Training Ltd (OMT Ltd) is seeking a values aligned volunteer accountant or bookkeeper to support the financial stewardship of our not-for-profit charity with Gift Deductible Recipient (DGR) status. This is an opportunity to bring clarity, compliance, and calm to the financial backbone of an organisation committed to safe, evidence based oncology massage education across Australia and New Zealand.

We are a small, purpose-led team with high professional standards. We take ethics seriously, use funds responsibly, and prioritise transparency... because our work ultimately supports people and families impacted by cancer, and the clinicians and therapists who care for them.

Key duties

Depending on your availability and expertise, your support may include:

Bookkeeping fundamentals

  • Bank and account reconciliations
  • Invoicing and receipt management
  • Accounts payable/receivable tracking
  • Maintaining clean, audit ready records

Not-for-profit compliance support

  • Support reporting requirements aligned with charity governance expectations (e.g., Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and other relevant obligations)
  • Ensure correct handling of DGR-related income, donations, and documentation

Financial reporting and insights

  • Monthly/quarterly financial snapshots (income/expenses, cash position, upcoming commitments)
  • Support for annual reporting and end-of-year processes (in partnership with our external accountant, if applicable)
  • Budget support for training programs, scholarships, and special projects

Process improvement

  • Light systemisation: consistent coding, templates, and simple procedures
  • Practical recommendations to strengthen controls, reduce admin load, and improve visibility

Stakeholder ready information

  • Board ready summaries that are clear, accurate, and easy to interpret
  • Support for grant acquittals or donor reporting where needed

Skills and experience (what we’re looking for)

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in not-for-profit bookkeeping/accounting (Australia preferred)
  • Working understanding of DGR considerations and ethical handling of donations
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • High integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgement
  • Comfortable communicating with a small team (clear, kind, direct)

Highly regarded

  • Familiarity with cloud accounting systems (e.g., Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks) and basic reporting
  • Understanding of GST/BAS processes (where relevant to a charity’s activities)
  • Experience preparing for year-end, working with an external accountant (if applicable), or supporting audits/reviews
  • Ability to build simple, repeatable systems that keep the organisation “finance healthy”
