Digital Literacy Mentor

ROLE PURPOSE AND IMPACT
As a Digital Literacy Mentor, you will provide 1:1 coaching, guidance, and encouragement to participants who are working towards achieving their personal goals. You will also provide training support to participants to improve their skills in using digital programs and devices.
Each participant’s goals are unique and may include securing employment, accessing study, starting a business, developing their English-speaking skills, understanding workplace culture, connecting with community, or simply having greater independence for day-to-day living through their increased digital confidence.
This role will involve meeting with participants either online or in person at one of our BSL sites located in Broadmeadows and Fitzroy. The location will be dependent on individual participant circumstances.
ROLE TASKS – What will you do?
- Assist participants with goal setting and provide one-to-one mentoring, coaching, and guidance to help participants achieve their goals over a period of 3-6 months.
- Provide computer literacy training in the skill areas identified by participants. This may include but is not limited to: accessing and using Microsoft Office, emails, conferencing platforms (ZOOM/Teams), online forms, navigating the internet, using MyGov, exploring job-search sites, or learning to operate their digital device.
- Plan and prepare training content for digital training sessions based on participants digital learning needs and goals.
- Provide mentoring support in areas that may include but are not limited to: offering industry insights and guidance around networking, sharing of relevant resources, offering support with interview practice, resume writing and cover letter feedback, and encouraging English conversation practice and support.
- Guide participants through their time in the program by maintaining regular communication, sending meeting invitations, follow up emails and reminders.
- Role modelling and sharing of skills and knowledge.
- Provide additional materials and resources relevant to the participant’s learnings.
- Report to Digital Literacy Volunteer Coordinator on progress of participant.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH:
- Experience in coaching/training delivery.
- Experience in mentoring others, formally or informally.
- A professional, kind, and mature approach.
- Confident computer user, and strong skills in some or all of the following computer systems and programs: Microsoft Office, internet, job seeking websites, emails, online conferencing (Zoom, Teams), smart phone technology, social media platforms.
- A can-do attitude, flexible and patient, a creative approach and the ability to ‘think outside the box’.
- Availability during business hours (preferable) to hold mentoring sessions with participants.
- Ability to engage with people from different cultural backgrounds.
- Understanding of working with job seekers who may be experiencing disadvantage.
- A passionate desire to contribute to positive change in people’s lives.
