Be Part of the Bamboo Revolution in Australia

Bamboo is one of the world’s most exciting renewable resources. Around the globe, it’s being transformed into cutting-edge building materials, sustainable consumer products, carbon-sequestering climate solutions, and large-scale land restoration projects.

Australia, however, is at a crossroads. Will we seize this opportunity, or risk being left behind as the rest of the world races ahead?

That’s where the Bamboo Society of Australia (BSA) comes in. We are a national not-for-profit dedicated to showcasing bamboo’s potential in construction, design, agriculture, sustainability, and climate action. With a growing membership and industry profile, we’re looking for passionate people to join our Board and help drive this momentum forward.

We are in the midst of creating a new exciting chapter, with our upcoming release of our 10-year roadmap for sustainable engineered bamboo for Australia. Exciting!

The Role

As a Board Member, you won’t just sit in meetings — you’ll help shape the direction of an emerging industry in Australia. You’ll be part of a team working to:

  • Guide the Society’s strategy, advocacy, and industry engagement
  • Support growth in membership, partnerships, and national impact
  • Strengthen governance and ensure we remain a trusted voice in the sector
  • Help deliver exciting projects, events.

Depending on your interests and expertise, you may also contribute in areas like:

  • Finance & fundraising – keeping us sustainable and growing
  • Communications & marketing – spreading the word and inspiring more Australians
  • Governance & compliance – ensuring strong foundations for growth
  • Events, stakeholder engagement and advocacy – connecting industry and community
  • Sustainability & environmental initiatives – driving climate-smart action

Who We’re Looking For

We’d love to hear from people who are:

  • Experienced in governance, business, academia, horticulture, community organisations or sustainability
  • Creative, collaborative, and keen to make an impact
  • Able to commit around 6 hours per month (online meetings + tasks)

Previous board experience is great but not essential. What matters most is your enthusiasm, reliability, and desire to help bamboo take root in Australia’s future.

What You’ll Gain

This isn’t just another committee role. As a BSA Board Member, you’ll:

  • Help put bamboo on the map in Australia
  • Build valuable governance and leadership experience
  • Connect with researchers, designers, builders, growers, and sustainability leaders
  • Contribute to a cause that aligns climate action, innovation, and industry development
  • Be part of something that could transform industries and landscapes for generations

How to Apply

  1. Membership requirement – Only current financial members are eligible to be appointed to the BSA Board. If you are not yet a member, please sign up before applying.
  2. Nomination form – All candidates must complete the BSA Board Nomination Form online.
  3. Supporting documentation (optional but encouraged) – To help members get to know you, you are encouraged to also submit a short CV and a supporting statement (e.g. cover letter) outlining your interest and relevant experience. Please submit the supporting documentation to Secretary/Treasurer via: members@bamboo.org.au.
  4. Closing date – Board applications close at 5:00 pm AEST on 30 September 2025.

Note: Becoming a paid member and submitting a form does not guarantee a Board position. All new Board members are elected by majority vote of the membership at the AGM.
