About the Role

Curling Australia is seeking a knowledgeable and committed volunteer to serve as Finance Officer, responsible for managing the organisation’s financial operations. Reporting to the CEO, the Finance Officer will oversee financial transactions, ensure compliance with financial regulations, and provide accurate financial reporting to support the organisation’s operations. This role is ideal for a volunteer who values teamwork, accountability, and contributing to the effective financial governance of a national sporting organisation.

Key Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are indicative requirements of the role and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all requirements:

1. Financial Management & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with financial regulations and best practices.
  • Prepare and present financial reports on a monthly and quarterly basis, including budgets, cash flow statements, and forecasts, to the Board and FAR Committee.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements and coordinate external audits if required.

2. Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with governance frameworks, funding agreements, and reporting obligations.
  • Oversee tax and regulatory requirements, including BAS and GST obligations if required.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and internal financial controls.

3. Transaction Oversight & Support

  • Oversee the work of the Assistant Finance Officer to ensure financial transactions are processed in a timely manner.
  • Manage financial documentation related to grant reporting and funding acquittals.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Professional experience in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA/CA qualification desirable but not essential).
  • Understanding of financial governance and reporting standards for not-for-profits or sporting organisations.
  • Experience in preparing financial reports, managing budgets, and working with financial committees.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks) and financial reporting tools.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A collaborative mindset, with the ability to build relationships and work effectively with volunteers, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to simplify financial information for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a volunteer team.
  • A valid Working With Children Check or an ability to secure one prior to appointment as well as a subsequent Child Safe Interview.

Commitment and Benefits:

This is a volunteer role with an approximate time commitment of half a day per month, to be defined by the successful postholder, including attendance at committee meetings held virtually (typically during the evening). While unpaid, this role provides the opportunity to:
