Role purpose
This role reports to the Youth and Community Engagement Practitioner. This role works in collaboration with staff and volunteers to operationalise Food Circle – our community-driven relief program.
About the role
Glebe Youth Service's 'Food Circle' program is a community driven food relief initiative that aims to get more quality fresh produce into local homes. With donations from various partner organisations, we provide a bag full of fresh fruit, vegetables and other staples to a number of households in need in the Glebe community every week.
We need a volunteer to collect food donations from Coles Broadway; and support the delivery of food hampers to local households. This role is one of the most important roles for our food program as Coles is one of our major suppliers; and it enables us to deliver food relief to households with accessibility limitations.
Volunteers are needed once to twice a month on Thursdays 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and/or on Thursdays 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm.
This role would involve a volunteer driving an automatic van to pick up supplies on Thursdays mornings from Coles Broadway; and/or deliver food hampers with a support person on Thursday afternoons to local households.
The key task of the volunteer is to drive a hired van located at Pyrmont to collect produce from Broadway Shopping Centre (Thursday mornings) before dropping produce off to the Glebe Youth Service and then parking the van in a local spot.
The second key task is to drive a hired van to deliver food hampers to approx. 30 households in the local area (Thursday mornings), supported by an experienced volunteer; and then return the van to a carpark in Pyrmont.
The role involves lifting small crates and supplies. The van is hired by Glebe Youth Service from an external organisation and is located at Pyrmont. You will be required to register as a driver with the external organisation for insurance purposes.
On your first shift, you will be accompanied by a Glebe Youth Service staff member as part of your induction.
If you choose to do local deliveries, you will always be accompanied by an experienced volunteer to support deliveries.
Volunteers can choose to do both shifts (morning and afternoon) or one shift (only morning, only afternoon); at a frequency from once a fortnight to once a month.
Role requirements
Volunteers will be required to:
-
Have a full driver’s licence.
-
Be confident in driving a van.
-
A Working With Children Check – which you can apply for at Service NSW. Applying as a volunteer means there is no cost to you.
-
Have the capability to lift heavy objects safely on your own.
-
Willingness to provide basic information such as your drivers licence number and contact details, so we can sign you up to Glebe Youth Service’s GoGet account.
