About Rise Above

Rise Above is a dedicated, community-focused charity providing financial and practical support to individuals and families impacted by cancer in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region. Our vision is to support as many cancer patients and their families as we can through the provision of financial assistance, which specifically addresses the patient’s medical prognosis and treatment program.

Our mission is to reduce the emotional and financial burden on families who have a member undergoing treatment for cancer. Guided by our core values of Compassion & Respect, Supportive & Resilient, Ethical & Trusted, and Connected to Community, we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those navigating the challenges of cancer, ensuring that no one faces the journey alone.

Rise Above has been proudly serving the Canberra and Queanbeyan community for almost 40 years, making a significant and lasting difference in the lives of individuals and families impacted by cancer. Over the decades, we have built a strong reputation as a trusted and compassionate charity, deeply connected to our local community. Our long-standing presence reflects our unwavering commitment to providing financial and practical support to those who need it most.

Key Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities of an Ordinary Board Member, the Treasurer will:

• Oversee the financial management and reporting of the organisation, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements are presented to the Board.
• Ensure that Rise Above complies with all relevant financial regulations, reporting obligations, and governance standards.
• Work closely with the CEO, Investment and Fundraising Committee, and external bookkeepers and auditors to maintain robust financial systems and processes.
• Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget, financial forecasts, and cash flow management.
• Provide strategic financial guidance to support decision-making and ensure alignment with the organisation’s mission and goals.
• Present the financial report at the Annual General Meeting.
• Facilitate and oversee audits, ensuring all recommendations are addressed in a timely manner.
• Chair the Investment and Fundraising Committee and lead discussions on financial planning, investment strategies, and resource allocation.
