Board Chair
Carers NSW is the peak non-government organisation for carers in NSW, part of the National Carer Network and a member of Carers Australia. The organisation has an exclusive focus on supporting and advocating for all carers regardless of their age, location, life-stage or circumstances. This includes those caring for family members and/or friends who may be living with disability, mental illness, health related and/or chronic conditions, drug and alcohol related issues, and those who may be frail due to ageing.
Carers NSW is a not-for-profit registered charity and company limited by guarantee. The organisation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth). The Board oversees the activities of Carers NSW and draws on the expertise and insights of Directors to achieve its strategic priorities
Role Overview:
As the Chairperson you will play a pivotal role in leading the Board of Directors, ensuring that Carers NSW fulfills its vision and strategic objectives. The Chairperson will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Board to provide leadership, vision, and oversight.
As the successful applicant you will undertake the following key tasks:
- Provide strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring that Carers NSW achieves its vision.
- Chair Board meetings, ensuring effective and collaborative discussions.
- Participate in Board sub committees
- Work closely with the CEO to support the development and implementation of strategic goals.
- Ensure the Board is aware of and complies with legal and regulatory requirements, and Board policies.
- Represent Carers NSW in a professional manner to stakeholders, at Carer Network meetings, national President’s meetings, and to the public.
- Foster a positive board culture, encouraging diverse perspectives and constructive debate.
Criteria:
As the successful applicant you will possess the following:
- Proven leadership experience in a similar role, preferably a chair position within the Not for Proft sector for at least 5 years
- Strong understanding of governance and the roles and responsibilities of a Board.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and provide clear guidance to the Board and CEO
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
- Understanding of federated structures in the not-for-profit sector
- Understanding and commitment to carer issues is desirable
- AICD membership is also desirable

Activities
It is imperative that the successful applicant can meet the commitments of the role. Meetings are held at least six times a year on the last Thursday of every second month and usually last from three to four hours. In addition, Board workshops may be scheduled from time to time as required. There are additional Board sub-committees and working groups.
Directors are appointed as individuals, not as nominees or representatives of organisations or a particular sector. They are not remunerated but their reasonable expenses may be covered
