Sundowning Resident Support

Leigh Place

This volunteer opportunity involves providing support to residents experiencing sundowning, a condition commonly associated with dementia that leads to increased confusion, agitation, and restlessness during the late afternoon and evening. Volunteers play a crucial role in offering comfort, companionship, and assistance during these challenging hours.

Key responsibilities include:

Engaging residents in calming activities such as conversations, music, or sensory activities. Assisting care staff in managing behaviors triggered by sundowning. Helping to create a soothing and safe environment, which may involve adjusting lighting, offering snacks, or participating in relaxation techniques.

This role is ideal for compassionate individuals with patience, empathy, and a willingness to work in a structured care setting. Prior experience in dementia care is helpful but not always required, as training is typically provided. Volunteers contribute significantly to improving the quality of life for residents, ensuring they feel supported and valued during difficult times of the day.
