Handel's Messiah Sydney - Seeking Singers for the Choir
Handel's Messiah is the most performed oratorio in the history of western music and includes the famous Hallelujah Chorus. It was composed by George Frederic Handel and first performed in Dublin in 1742 as a fundraising concert.
More than 250 years later, the Handel's Messiah Sydney choir continues the tradition of annual performances that raise money for charities that support the needy and vulnerable. Tens of thousands of dollars of raised and donated every year by this Sydney event.
The choir is made of enthusiastic volunteer singers who give their time to rehearse for nine weeks from October to December, then give two performances in the historic Sydney Town Hall the weekend before Christmas (Saturday and Sunday afternoon matinees).
There are no auditions, and both experienced and novice (beginner) choral singers are invited to participate. The weekly rehearsals guide singers through the entire oratorio, and practice tracks are available so that choristers can practice at home as often as they like.
The performances are supported by young emerging opera singers who provide their amazing voices to sing the lead parts. The choir is proud to support new artists in this way.
If you would like the life-changing opportunity to join in this amazing annual event, make wonderful friends, stretch yourself creatively, and raise money for charity - this is the opportunity for you.
There is a small registration fee to cover administration and rehearsal costs ($35 for adults, free for students).
You will need to have a copy of the Messiah score (the music). The Prout edition is preferred, and copies are available for sale at rehearsals for $30 (copies may also be sourced online at your own convenience).
There is no dress code for rehearsals. Choristers are required to wear white shirts and black trousers/skirts for performances (your own clothing).
