Starlight Express Room Volunteer - John Hunter Children's Hospital

Starlight Children's Foundation

Logo for Starlight Children's Foundation

Help make hospital fun in our medical-free haven for children and their families, the Starlight Express Room!

Our mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children, young people and their families. Our volunteers are at the heart of our Programs, bringing happiness to sick kids when they need it most. Because happiness matters!

Join the Starlight Children’s Foundation team and you’ll be part of a wonderful, diverse, positive community of like-minded people. Our team members share Starlight’s SHINE value and are committed to our mission.

You’ll work closely with our very own superhero, Captain Starlight, giving children and their families a chance to reconnect and take a break from the stress and pain of illness and treatment.

What does a typical shift look like?
Hospital shifts vary, and you’ll bring your warmth, positivity and energy to each one.

You’ll welcome visitors to the room, engage kids in craft, play video games, sing and dance (talent is optional!), play card games… you name it! You’ll also help keep the room clean and organised.

What’s the time commitment?

  • Three hours of volunteering each fortnight, for at least 12 months.

  • Shift times are Monday - Friday mornings (9.30am - 12.30pm) or afternoons (1.30pm - 4.30pm)

Will I be trained?

Absolutely! Successful applicants receive complete on-boarding, training and support. We want you to have the best possible experience.

Anything else I should know?

Yes, and it’s important too! We’re committed to providing positive experiences in an environment that’s caring, nurturing and safe. Successful applicants will therefore undertake a Working With Children Check and a National Police Check.

Further, as part of our commitment to the safety of our team and community, we work closely with hospitals to ensure we are strictly following all COVID safe guidelines. Be assured we are very cautious in our approach.

Additional requirements:

  • You must be aged 18 or older to apply

  • Successful applicants must comply with our vaccination policy

Starlight's vision for reconciliation is to embed values of awareness, acknowledgement and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their culture within our organisation. We welcome applications from people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.
