About TFL The Footpath Library helps people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness engage their mind and feel socially included by providing access to free quality books and reading glasses through our mobile library outreach services in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Established in 2007, TFL is the only free-giving library in Australia, and our mobile libraries are run by dedicated teams of volunteers. TFL has given away more than 70,000 books to those who are most vulnerable in our communities, as well as reading glasses and donated knitted goods such as beanies and scarves. Our mission is to encourage the benefits of reading, improve literacy, and provide opportunities for social connection and inclusion. Research shows that books and reading have a positive impact on one’s mental health and wellbeing, and people experiencing homelessness or disadvantage should be able to enjoy a book to escape, learn and engage their mind. TFL does not discriminate – our mobile libraries meet people where they’re at, collaborating with other service providers (such as food, shelter, and clothing services), and we welcome people of all ages, gender, background, and circumstances. TFL currently employs 4 part time staff across Sydney, Melbourne and Perth plus a contracted Partnerships Consultant and casual van driver.
