Sutherland Shire Environment Centre (SSEC) is an independent, not-for-profit, community organisation actively involved in a wide range of projects aimed at maintaining the natural beauty and character of the Sutherland Shire, surrounding bioregions, waterways and parks.

We are seeking a Treasurer who has a good understanding of financial principles, budgeting, financial reporting, and accounting practices, and who will work autonomously and collaboratively with other Board members, our Public Officer, and volunteers.

The Treasurer is a key Executive Board member and plays a critical role in our organisation.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Manage the efficient operation of all financial aspects of the Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, keep up to date records and together with our Public Officer ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as keeping all relevant details of the Centre updated in the ACNC Charities Register.

  • Pay bills, issue invoices and record transactions in Quickbooks, reconcile bank and PayPal accounts, and prepare Quarterly Business Activity Statements.

  • Prepare financial reports for monthly Board meetings. Keep a record of all invoices / financial documents on Google Drive.

  • Attend Board meetings (in person or via Zoom), and assist with key decisions regarding the strategic direction of the Centre.

  • Collaborate with other Board members to develop and implement financial strategies aligned with our Centre’s goals.

  • Prepare the financial report for the Annual General Meeting.

  • Send accounts to our Auditor for review.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Formal qualifications and/or an understanding and knowledge of bookkeeping.

  • Ability to manage the finances of a small organisation, provide financial updates and present this information clearly to others.

  • Familiarity with the unique financial challenges and regulations faced by nonprofits, including an understanding of relevant financial regulations and compliance requirements, such as tax laws and reporting obligations.

  • Proficiency with accounting software and the ability to use Quickbooks (or similar).

  • Demonstrated experience of working as a part of a management team to deliver results.

  • Ability to work with Gmail and Google Drive and a range of software including Zoom, and other Office software.

  • Committed to environmental protection and SSEC Aims and Objectives.

DESIRABLE SKILLS , EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • High level communication skills

  • Experience in a treasurer role or similar

  • Experience in environmental advocacy or activities

  • A Sutherland Shire resident
