Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) is a national for purpose organisation. Its purpose is to reduce the incidence and impact of macular disease – the leading cause of legal blindness and severe vision loss in Australia. MDFA has four pillars of work: prevention and early detection, supports and services, advocacy, and research and data.

Role overview The Research Assistant Volunteer will support the Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) by contributing to research activities aimed at reducing the impact of macular diseases in Australia.

The volunteer will work closely with the research team to ensure the success of various research projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Summarise and synthesise findings to inform ongoing and future research projects.
  • Assist in collecting primary and secondary data for various research projects.
  • Perform data entry and ensure the accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Analyse data using appropriate methodologies.
  • Assist in preparing materials for dissemination to stakeholders, including patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public.

Desirable skills and qualities

  • Familiarity with research methodologies, literature review techniques, and data analysis.
  • Understanding of research ethics and commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all research activities.
  • Empathy and the ability to engage with others who are affected by macular disease.
  • Reliability and commitment to the role and its responsibilities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and respect for privacy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to summarisze complex information clearly and concisely.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute positively to team dynamics.
  • Commitment to the vision, mission, and values of MDFA.

Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience in health, community services, or related fields is advantageous but not required.
  • Enrolled in a degree in a relevant field.
