As Chair of a six person Board, Prof. Stokes has provided guidance and stability through a busy six year period during which B4H WA has developed from a ‘backyard’ outdoor operation in a Council yard to a more sophisticated workshop in commercial warehouse premises.  This transformation has included huge improvements in operational processes, and focus on health and safety of all volunteers, especially challenging through the COVID pandemic. B4H WA is part of a worldwide, grass-roots, volunteer-run movement focused on simple, sustainable empowerment through bicycle transport in the developing world. Since establishment in 2011, B4H WA has shipped 8500 refurbished, pre-loved bicycles, plus spare parts and tools in 23 containers to NFP and corporate partners in five African countries and another 1500 bikes to schools in remote WA and NT communities.  In the communities served, bicycle ownership is life-changing – for someone who would otherwise walk, a bike allows them to travel twice as far, twice as fast and carry four times the load. The Board of B4H WA is principally charged with a governance role, but also has a hands-on responsibility to lead the volunteers who are critical to day to day work. The Board also provides conduits to assist with fundraising and grant applications. The Board is assisted by a Management Sub-Committee who oversee operations. Although it may help, you don’t have to be a cyclist, but you will need a passion to give back to others.
